As architects, we spend a sizeable amount of our time dealing with planning applications but what challenges do we face with our designs? We are going to take a look at some of the most common challenges we face over a series of blogs and in today’s blog, we specifically look at the impact of sustainability on planning applications.
We fundamentally believe in the principles that underpin sustainable architecture. Sustainable architecture minimises the negative environmental impact of buildings through efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, waste, and energy resources. We understand that we have an essential responsibility to design eco-friendly buildings that enable people to live sustainably and make the best use of their available resources from lighting, heating, and water through to the actual materials we use in our designs.
As part of the planning application process, it is essential that we include information that demonstrates that our designs meet sustainability requirements and that they reflect more environmentally friendly and ecologically-friendly choices. This can include analysis of daylight and climate, the styles and volumes of materials used, waste management, and energy efficiency.
We ensure that we use natural materials where possible, particularly when renovating or extending Listed buildings. Using local stone for example creates synergy with the surrounding building and the environment. The Cotswolds landscape commands respectful, sympathetic architecture. We believe in designs which fuse contemporary modern architecture with existing traditional structures which are both innovative and environmentally friendly.
