A traditional architect is defined as one who works sympathetically with the original structure of buildings. The majority of our renovation or extension projects are to existing Cotswold traditional buildings, many of them Listed or historic properties. This extends far beyond the actual design itself. We carefully select materials that are sympathetic to and in keeping with the existing structure and are locally sourced.
A lot of our projects involve entirely original buildings with requirements tending to lean towards additional space and increasing natural light. Listed buildings, conservation areas and the AONB all mean that additional permissions need to be obtained. Architectural design should be both sensitive to the surrounding landscape and sympathetic to the existing structure of the original building. However, contemporary additions also work well with the contrast between traditional features such as Cotswold stone and oak framework with more modern glazed link walkways and metal style frames allowing for visually stunning designs.
The one thing traditional doesn’t mean at Ashleigh Clarke Architects is a traditional approach – we work collaboratively both with each other and our clients. Architecture is not a dark art; it is an act of imagination that is highly practical. That’s what we mean by ‘beautiful, functional architecture’.
