We designed this two-storey rear extension to provide additional space for modern family living. The mixture of timber cladding to weather naturally silver, Cotswold cream render, contemporary aluminium and oak frames create a softening contrast with the stone of the existing house. The double set of French doors on the ground floor floods the interior spaces with natural light whilst affording lovely views of the surrounding gardens with the first-floor windows giving extensive views across the surrounding countryside.
We "found" Ashleigh through his website: we liked what it showed of his work, and we liked what he says about his approach to design and construction. A recommendation from RIBA confirmed our decision. Our project was to develop a 1970s detached house in an attractive location in a Cotswold town, restructuring the internal layout and adding a two story extension (and improving the outward appearance of the house). We had a rough idea about the functional spaces we wanted, but had no practical vision about how to fit these together into a layout that would work for us. Ashleigh had long discussions with us to help define what we wanted, preparing several versions of outline plans while we worked towards an ultimate solution. He remained patient and constructive throughout this somewhat demanding process, cheerfully scrapping and revising early versions of the plans as our ideas developed and crystallised. Ashleigh firmly embraces the style of Cotswold buildings; he has planned the structure of, and building materials to be used in, the extension and modifications to the existing building, such that the aesthetic appeal of the original somewhat uninteresting house will be considerably enhanced. Because he is familiar with the thinking and practice of those involved with the planning process (in what is a Conservation Area and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) there were no hitches in gaining planning permission. Ashleigh has designed a house that will delight us in our old age, and which will enhance the appearance of its surroundings in a traditional Cotswold town. We should add that Ashleigh is a very nice man to deal with! - endlessly patient, positive and constructive throughout the process. We are delighted with our decision to engage him as the architect for this project.
